Why Opus 5 is a better default than the absolute ceiling
Fable 5 exists for the hardest tail of the workload. Opus 5 is easier to justify for everyday premium use: Anthropic prices it at the Opus tier, while the live independent scores place it at the top of the current overall table. That changes the buying question from “Which model can do the most?” to “How often does Fable add enough value to cover twice the token price?”
For most teams, routing is the answer. Keep Opus 5 as the high-quality path, measure completed-task cost, and reserve Fable for prompts where Opus repeatedly stalls, misses cross-file implications, or fails a domain-specific evaluator.
